Field Trip to Mars
Created by Lockheed Martin in Washington, DC, USA , 2016
Touted as “the first-ever headset-free group virtual reality vehicle experience,” aerospace forerunners Lockheed Martin teamed with the McCann creative agency to imagine Field Trip to Mars, an ultra-elaborate immersion designed to transport students to the surface of the Red Planet. Housed in a mobile, fully functional school bus, the Mars experience retrofit the vehicle’s windows with transparent HD display screens — each secretly cued to illuminate with 360° views of Martian landscape. With an ecosystem designed to correspond with over 200 square miles of actual Washington, D.C. infrastructure, the rolling adventure’s responsive screens employ GPS technology and an accelerometer to mirror the bus’ real-life movements, completing the illusion.
