Created by Rawstorne Studio in Auckland, New Zealand , 2013

A ‘boil-up’ occurs when baitfish swarm in a tightly packed spherical form as a means to escape predators. For the Auckland Museum's "Moana - My Ocean" exhibition Rawstorne Studio created ‘Boil-Up,’ a groundbreaking AI experiential installation depicting this phenomenon. Working with the innovative coder Robert Hodgin and the Marine Biology team at the museum, Rawstorne created 7000 virtual bait and predator fish whose activity mirrored their natural behavior. Using AI, each species was further customized to detail movement, schooling patterns, hunting techniques and in the case of the dolphins create an algorithm that ensured they worked together to drive the baitfish towards the surface. The experience was installed in a 6 meter circular ‘theatre’ space incorporating a 270º screen and 4 projectors.
