DermalAbyss
Created by Katia Vega + Xin Liu + Viirj Kan + Nick Barry + MIT Media Lab + Ali Yetisen + Nan Jiang + Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA, USA , 2017
Conceived by researchers at MIT and Harvard Medical School, DermalAbyss is a proof-of-concept study designed to transform a skin’s surface into a kind of interactive display. Replacing traditional tattoo inks with color-changing biosensors, researchers used ex vivo pig skin to monitor four different biochemical reactions without breaking the surface: glucose, sodium and a pair of pH sensors. Never intended for clinical trials, the DermalAbyss team’s science could nevertheless see potential application in medical diagnostics, saving diabetic patients the pain of piercing the skin to monitor glucose levels.
