Created by Lucy McRae + Qualcomm + Inventor Lab in Los Angeles, CA, USA , 2016

“Science fiction artist” Lucy McRae’s Future Day Spa is part installation, part physiological experiment: participants are guided by the artist to lay upon a table in a sterile room, before being vacuum-sealed beneath a pressurised mylar sheet — designed to simulate the feeling of being hugged. Biometric devices capture changes in the visitor’s physiology as they are encouraged to relax. The data from Future Day Spa is intended to provide insight into the piece’s practical potential, which McRae suggests might have a positive impact sufferers of social isolation, autism and depression.
