Created by University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, USA , 2015

Conceived by artist Ivan Toth Depeña under the commission of New Mexico Arts, “Inside/Out” is a dynamic light installation housed in the glass circulation tower that bisects the University of New Mexico’s WisePise Arena. Imagined as a living, breathing feature of the desert’s landscape, “Inside/Out” uses audio sensors near the arena’s bleachers to monitor variations in crowd noise inside the building — data that affects the color and frequency of the LED lights projecting outward from the tower’s windows. At dusk, light sensors trigger the tower to reflect the unique palette of the setting sun (the “out”) — activating an artificial construction into a dialog with the natural world.
