The MIT Autonomous Bicycle allows users to call for a bicycle using an app similar to car sharing apps such as Uber and Lyft. The difference is that the MIT bicycle arrives autonomously using an innovative tricycle design that then converts to a traditional two wheel experience. Once the user arrives at their destination the MIT bicycle converts back into the tricycle and either moves on to pick up another user or back to it’s charging station. While still in development, the current prototype is operated through a remote control, the MIT Autonomous Bicycle has the potential to transform the bike-sharing experience through door-to-door service that eliminates the problem of finding available bicycles or docks.
