Reviving Los Angeles’ Lost Murals
Created by El Pollo Loco in Los Angeles, CA , 2019
Los Angeles is known as the mural capital of the world. Around 60 percent of murals in Los Angeles have vanished due to whitewashing, censorship, carelessness, or a lack of resources for preservation. Many iconic LA murals are the works of Latino artists, featuring imagery that connects the Latino experience to the heart of Los Angeles.
El Pollo Loco and Snapchat have teamed up with renowned Latino artists, Juan Hector Ponce and Hector “Hex” Rios to digitally restore five local murals. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, anyone visiting one of the five mural locations can download the Snapchat app and scan a code located at the mural site to see what that mural would have looked like there, had it not been removed.
