The Autism Glass Project
Created by Stanford Medicine in Stanford, CA, USA , 2016
As a tool for helping children with autism develop stronger social skills, a Stanford University study used a smartphone app-connected Google Glass to assist wearers in determining the meanings of different facial expressions. Children with autism frequently struggle with faces, this project is meant to assist them in cultivating a visual vocabulary for decoding and interpreting facial expressions. Researchers hope that this will aid users in future social development including creating and maintaining lasting friendships. Using machine learning, this “Superpower Glass” as the young subjects sometimes call it, analyzes facial expressions in real time and presents the meaning to the wearer thereby developing the subject’s ability to distinguish what these expressions mean without the device.
