UNMAS “Sweeper”
Created by Critical Mass in Calgary, Alberta , 2014
For Mine Awareness Day, United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) wanted to incorporate digital experience design into their messaging strategy. They asked Critical Mass to introduce their cause to the general public and help people understand the gravity of the problem. Beacon technology, combined with a custom mobile app, could create a very powerful digital experience within a physical exhibit. Now permanently installed in the UN Headquarters in New York, when visitors enter the exhibit, they are prompted to download the mobile app. A three-part experience follows. The app guides visitors as they explore the exhibit, complete with sound design elements that establish a tense mood and atmosphere via headphones. Next, as visitors enter the vicinity of a beacon, they trigger a virtual “detonation,” complete with a realistic-sounding explosion. The app then provided educational information and a way to donate via text message.
