Multiplayer AR or “Social AR” is the next major step for augmented reality. Stereolabs’ ZED Mini, the world’s first mixed reality camera, is breaking augmented reality free from these limitations by enabling collaborative AR experiences on VR headsets such as the HTC Vive. Ping Pong AR, a demo made with ZED Mini and Unreal Engine allows users to play table tennis with a friend over a virtual table. Building multiplayer AR on VR platforms required the Stereolabs team to solve several technical challenges, such as synchronizing the position of the two players, dynamic occlusions, and video latency. In order to share the experience with a third user Stereolabs combined a ZED with a Vive tracker allowing a spectator to join the two players in real time.
